We would like to congratulate Jesus Avila of Thomas More College on being selected as our NSCRO Student-Leader of the Month!
Avila played three years of football before transitioning to rugby. In the two years he has been playing rugby, the positions he played included wing, fullback and more recently, scrum half. On the field, not only was Avila a "fierce tackler and a shifty breakaway runner", he is a strategic and unselfish player - asserting himself during the "appropriate situations...creating opportunities for [his teammates] on the field and giving them much needed inspiration at key times during matches."
Off the field, Avila volunteered his time to a few organizations and causes, including: the Special Olympics, the Cincinnati Bengals games to help raise funds for the ROTC program, and help set up dorms for students for ROTC.
He was awarded the first ROTC full scholarship and has been a member of their Ranger Team. He is currently the Battalion Commander where he oversees and manages over 100 cadets representing five different schools: Xavier University, Thomas More College, Miami University, Northern Kentucky University and Mount St. Joseph University. Upon completion of his four-year program, he will be commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army.
Avila is the first generation of his family to attend college and serve in the military.
Al Lucas, Head Rugby Coach at Thomas More College commented, "Jesus provided the Club a strong example of work ethic, and achievement. He balanced his academic schedule with ROTC, work and rugby throughout the Fall. Although he never boasted of his accomplishments in all those areas, he allowed the coaching staff to use him as an positive example and role model of a successful student-athlete."
As the Student-Leader of the Month, he will receive a framed certificate and an NSCRO T-shirt, courtesy of Rhino Rugby.
Nominations for the Student-Leader of the Month should be submitted by the 20th of each month. Winners will be announced by the 25th of the month. To submit your nomination, click here to complete the nomination form.
