St. Edward's University rugby football club (SEURFC) - sponsored by Noble Capital -became the first ever NSCRO team to defeat a Varsity Cup team on Fri Oct. 17th when they defeated the University of Texas in a thrilling 29-27 victory at Texas's home field. SEURFC's man of the match was junior scrum half Conner McNally who scored twice and led the team by helping them dominate possession and territory.
Head Coach Lachlan Ferguson stated after the game that he was pleased with the result and that win "exemplifies the work we done over the past four years and proves that we are a team which can compete with anyone in the state". Assistant Coach Brannen Ellyson pointed out that SEURFC played the last 10 minutes of the game down a man do to a yellow card and stated" that was our greatest challenge of the match, leading by a score and down a man we had to step up and play perfect team defense to secure the win, we made our mistakes tonight but made the key plays when it counted, that is what defines a good squad".
SEURFC is the defending Lonestar Conference NSCRO Champion and will look to secure back to back championships this coming Spring.
St. Edward's, a school just around 1400 male undergraduate students defeating a school with global name recognition and boasting the largest student enrollment in the nation – with nearly 18,000 male undergrads - is "something special, and something for us to build on but, in the end it was just another game and one of many we have to come out the other side of to accomplish our goals this year" stated Ellyson.
St. Edward’s lost a heartbreaker by a score of 27 to 23 to the University of Denver in the 2014 NSCRO Cowboy Cup Qualifier final. Denver went on to finish 3rd in the NSCRO National Championship.
